World Urban Forum 9

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. 7 – 13 February 2018.

ASPI has participated to host a side event in World Urban Forum 9 in collaboration with Global Planning Education Association Network (GPEAN). The side event title is “Capacity Building for the New Urban Agenda: Education of Planners”. It was conducted on  Saturday, 10 February 2018 at WUF 9 Venue, KLCC, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, which was attended by about 60 international participants.

The speakers of the side event i.e. Prof. Dr. Bruce Stiftel (GPEAN/ACSP); Dr. Enrique Silva (Lincoln Institute of Land Policy/UNHABITAT), Prof. Dr. Zeynep Gunay (TUPOB), Prof. Dr. Juan Ángel Demerutis Arenas (ALEUP), Prof. Haryo Winarso, Ph.D (ASPI), with the moderator: Prof. Bakti Setiawan, Ph.D (ASPI). The panel discussion represented international universities and learned societies, which explored the potential roles of universities in capacity building for planners education for the New Urban Agenda.

Some important points that were discussed in the side event i.e.

• There is high demand of planners to support the development planning, as well SDGs and NUA implementation.
• In the development practice, there are many context and multi level of the condition/problems those need specific capacity of the planners to deal with. The planners capacity building needs to be appropriate with the specification of development problems.
• The capacity building for planners and improvement of planning education need to refers and learn from the planning practice and professional.
• The education of planners need to cover both the formal academic education and life long education through courses for professional planners.
• It is important to link the academic research with the policy making and development process as inclusive knowledge production. As well the critics from external voices, i.e. practitioners and community, are important inputs for planning schools curriculum improvement.
• The planning studio could be as a media of planning education to implement the planning lectures with real planning practices.
• The planning education should be a collaboration activity among students and teachers.
• The capacity building for planners need also to covers soft skill capacity and science capacity.
• There is the improvement need of networking and collaboration among planning schools, as well with government, private sectors, community, and other professions, to improve the capacity in the implementation of the SDGs and NUA.

In the  WUF 9 session, the chair of ASPI, Dr. M. Sani Roychansyah also gave a speech in talk show at Indonesia booth, WUF 9 exhibition venue. 10 February 2018, KLCC Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

ASPI members delegation also participated in many events in the WUF 9 activities. All of these activities are part of ASPI support for SDGs and NUA implementation.

Cities 2030, Cities for all: Implementing the New Urban Agenda

The Ninth Session of the World Urban Forum was the first session to focus on the implementation of the New Urban Agenda adopted in Habitat III.

WUF 9 expected become an instrumental to substantively feed into the inputs for the first report of the implementation of the New Urban Agenda. The Forum also contributed to global mobilization towards advocating for the common vision on sustainable urban development in advancing on the achievement of the Agenda 2030 and the Sustainable Development Goals.
